Broken wrist. Coloured X-ray of a comminuted fracture of the distal radius and the styloid process of the ulna in a 42-year-old man. The wrist joint is at upper right. The lower arm bones (the radius and ulna) have fractured where they join with the wrist (the distal and styloid regions),and are no longer correctly aligned. A comminuted fracture is one where a bone has fragmented, rather than fracturing only in one place, and is more difficult to treat than a simple fracture. Here, the bones were realigned and a plate and screws inserted to hold the radius together. The injury was sustained following a cycling accident | |
