Pigeon tower,Isfahan,Iran. Large pigeon towers and dovecotes were widespread in Iran in ancient times, notably in and around Isfahan, where this recently restored tower is located. The purpose of the towers was to collect the guano of the pigeons that would nest there. The guano was used as a manure on plants, and it was said to be of a high quality, suitable for cultivating melons and cucumbers | |
