Telescope mount for 1874 transit of Venus. This altazimuth telescope mount was used in obsevations of the 1874 transit of Venus from the Kerguelen Archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean. An altazimuth is used to measure the altitude (from the horizon) and azimuth (angle from north) of a celestial body. The transit of Venus occurs twice every 113 years. Several expeditions were organised to different locations to observe the 1874 transit. The combined results helped established the distance of Venus and the Sun from the Earth, and hence the size of the solar system | |
