Oesophageal cancer surgery instrument. Anvil end of a stapling instrument after use on a patient during oesophageal cancer surgery. The device (trigger section not seen) is known as a circular end-to-end anastomosis (CEEA) stapling gun. It pulls two rings of tissue together, fires a ring of staples to join them, and then cuts a hole to create a new lumen. Here,it has been used to connect the upper oesophagus to the stomach (oesophago-gastric anastomosis) in a patient with cancer of the oesophagus (gullet). The lower oesophagus had turned cancerous and was removed | |
