| Atheromatous coronary artery,post-mortem. The coronary artery (centre) is seen in cross-section in this sample of heart tissue. The artery's lumen (central space) has been greatly narrowed by the presence of atheroma (pale yellow,fatty deposits) on the artery wall. This impedes the blood flow and if the artery becomes completely blocked,will cut off blood supply to the heart muscle,leading to a potentially fatal heart attack.
