Wilkins Ice Shelf break-up,2008,aerial photograph. The March 2008 break-up of part of this massive ice shelf in Antarctica was observed by satellite,and then photographed from the air using small aircraft operated by researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). An area of 405 square kilometres broke away in this break-up event,and as of 2009 the rest of the ice shelf (some 14,000 square kilometres) is attached to the land only by a narrow strip of ice. It is thought that global warming will eventually cause the entire ice shelf to be lost
