Instruments used in surgery to replace the worn surface of the ball joint in a patient suffering from significant osteoarthritis of the shoulder. Osteoarthritis causes the surface of the joint to wear and become rough. The surgery,known as a hemiarthroplasty,inserts a mushroom-shaped prosthetic metal 'cap' on top of the worn ball,at the top of the arm bone (humerus). This provides a new,smooth surface. A pin on the underside of the cap,inserted into the top of the bone,holds the prosthesis in place. For images of the prosthetic 'cap' see C001/4576 and C001/4578
