Forensic ballistics cartridge test. Forensic scientist using a microscope to compare markings on a crime scene bullet cartridge with a test bullet cartridge. The two images are being compared on the screen at lower right. The cartridges held bullets,but were ejected from a gun as the bullet was fired. Unique markings are made as the firing pin of a gun hits the cartridge and as the cartridge recoils from the bullet. The markings can be analysed and compared to markings on cartridges test-fired from guns suspected of being used in crimes. If they match,then that gun was used at the crime scene where the cartridge was found
