They are usually harmless but can cause serious illness such as encephalitis,meningitis,heart and liver disease. Echovirus type 12 (pink and white) gains entry into cells by binding onto a host protein receptor known as decay accelerating factor (DAF,purple). This image was created using molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. Cryo-electron microscopy uses multiple angled beams of electrons to image specimens kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius. The resulting 'slices' of data are reconstructed into 3-D models on computer
