Diverticular disease. Endoscope view of a diverticulum filled with faeces (lower left) in a sigmoid colon affected by colonic diverticular disease (CDD). CDD causes sacs (diverticula) to form and protrude externally from the colon wall. These can become inflamed,infected and may rupture (diverticulitis). If ruptured,haemorrhaging may occur with inflammation of the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or abscess formation. Treatment requires antibiotic drugs. More severe cases may require surgery to remove part of the colon
