Airy's clock mechanism. These three diagrams, showing a clock escapement, were drawn by the English mathematician and astronomer George Biddell Airy (1801-1892). An escapement is a device which converts rotational motion into an oscillating or back and forth motion. Here, this allows the hands of a clock to advance at a steady controlled rate.
