Kidney, artwork. The kidneys (of which there are two) perform a vital role in cleaning the blood. They filter waste products such as urea (a nitrogenous waste) and excrete the urea in the form of urine. The urine drains to the bladder (not seen) through a tube called a ureter (lower right). On the top of each kidney is an adrenal gland (yellow). This gland produces adrenaline, along other hormones. Adrenaline is best-known for being produced as part of the flight-or-fight response. The kidneys are located in the upper rear section of the abdomen, either side of the spine (not seen) | |
