Sir Robert Geoffrey Edwards (1925-2013),British physiologist and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) pioneer,with photographs of IVF babies. Edwards began his work on human fertilisation around 1960,achieving fertilisation in the laboratory in 1968. He then worked with Patrick Steptoe to develop IVF techniques. The first IVF baby,Louise Brown,was born in 1978. Edwards has received numerous awards worldwide for his work,and was made CBE in 1988. He won the 2010 Nobel Prize for medicine for this work on IVF and was knighted in 2011. Photographed in 1989,at Bourn Hall Clinic,Bourn,Cambridgeshire,England
