Sycamore seeds. These seeds of the sycamore tree (Acer pseudoplatanus) are winged. The wings cause the seeds to rotate as they fall from their parent tree, keeping them airborne in the manner of a helicopter. This allows the wind to carry them far from their parent tree, aiding the spread of the tree and also preventing the young trees from having to compete for light and nutrients with their parent. The sycamore is native to Europe, although it has been introduced into temperate areas worldwide. It is commonly planted in cities as it is resistant to pollution and other environmental stresses | |
