A characteristic of penny cress,used in species identification,is the persistent short style situated in a deep notch at the bottom of the pod. The style is a part of the female reproductive apparatus of the plant. It connects the stigma (pollen receiving body) to the ovaries (home of the eggs),which lie deeper within the flower. It is also the path down which the pollen tube bearing the male gametes must travel to meet & fertilise the eggs.
