Chamomile pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a single tricolporate pollen grain from a German chamomile flower,Matricaria recutita. Pollen grains are the male sexual spores that are discharged from the male part of the flower. They contain the gamete that fertilizes the female ovule to form a seed. This pollen has 3 furrows from each of which protrudes a bulge or pore (light brown) and is thus classified as "tricolporate". German chamomile relies on insects to carry the pollen to another flower. The spikes (orange) help the pollen grain to attach itself to an insect for this purpose.
