Many pollen grains are seen with their sculpted,lace-like surfaces. A pollen tube (at centre) has grown out of one pollen grain; this tube grows down into one of the finger-like projections that form the female stigma (blue) of the flower. The tube penetrates the stigma and style,to reach the ovaries at the base of the style. The tube then conveys two male gametes,or sperm cells,which fertilize an ovule (egg) to produce a seed.
