False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a flower bud of the snapdragon,Antirrhinum majus. The sepals of the flower have been removed to show the compact structure of the bud early in its development. The outer structure consists of the 5 petals, still at this point symmetrical although the mature flower is zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical). Under the petals are the 4 anthers, the male reproductive structures where pollen is produced. In the centre is the tip of the style, part of the female reproductive apparatus, which later forms the stigmatic surface where pollen is trapped for fertilisation. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size.
