Gypsy rose seed head (4th of 4 images). Close-up of the ripe seed head of the field scabious or gypsy rose,Knautia arvensis. Once fertilized the ovaries of the flower head develop into seeds. Each of the seeds is protected by hairs and spines formed from the remnants of the flowers. The gypsy rose is a medium tall perennial plant which grows in dry grassy places and corn fields,and flowers between June and October.
