Macrophotograph of the primula flower Primula malacoides, known also as the fairy primrose. A popular spring flowering plant,it was introduced into Britain in 1908 from Yunnan,China. It is notable for the covering of a floury substance called farina along the flowering stalks, sepals & base of the petals. This is a waxy secretion produced by the farina glands to protect the flower from the effects of cold & condensation. The glands consist of a secretory cell on top of a short stalk.
