False colour scanning electron micrograph of peltate trichomes (circular, stalked leaf hairs) on the underside of the leaf of the sea buckthorn,Hippophae rhamnoides. This plant is in the family Oleaster, all members of which possess these hairs. It is thought that such overlapping hairs provide a shield over the pores (stomata) in the leaf surface, helping to reduce moisture evaporation due to drying winds. The sea buckthorn is widespread on sand dunes, and also on mountain sites in the Pyrenees, the Alps,in Asia and Japan. A symbiotic actinomycete (bacteria) enables it to survive in poor calcareous sites. Magnification: x65 at 6x4.5cm size | |
