Bamboo vascular system. Light micrograph of a section through a bamboo stem showing its vascular tissue. The black holes at centre are xylem tubes formed by dead tissue. Xylem tubes transport water and minerals from the roots. The dense arrangement of small cells (pink) in association with the xylem is the phloem. The phloem is responsible for transporting food substances from the leaves to other parts of the plant. Together, the xylem and phloem make up a vascular bundle. In between the vascular bundles are the larger cells of cortical tissue. Magnification: x92 at 6x9cm size | |
