Yew wood. Light micrograph of a transverse section through wood of the Yew tree,Taxus baccata. Here, tracheids (non-living xylem) are seen forming successive rings. These are annual growth rings of the Yew. In each ring, the cells become gradually smaller until the dense line signifies winter, followed by a rapid change to large cells of spring. The Yew tree is a "coneless conifer",being an evergreen gymnosperm widely distributed throughout Europe. It is a very long lived tree, sometimes credited with ages of 2000 years.
