Prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) with ripe fruit (red). The cactus is native to arid regions of North and Central America, but has been introduced to many other areas of similar climate. It is grown as a crop in such regions, where few other plants can grow. Its fruits are edible,as are its young stem segments (cladodes).
