Developing sundew. Macrophotograph of a developing inflorescence of a cape sundew (Drosera capensis). An inflorescence is a group of flowers. The sundew is an insectivorous plant which, when mature, has flowering heads covered in sticky tentacles. The plant's smell attracts insects, which land on the tentacles and become stuck. The plant then encloses the insect and releases digestive enzymes to obtain nutrients, particularly nitrogen, from its body. The sundew does this to allow it to live in low nutrient areas, and it generally inhabits bogs and marshland. Magnification: x1.5 at 35mm size | |
