Yew tree (Taxus baccata). The yew is an evergreen tree native to Britain,and now distributed throughout Europe and north Africa. It grows up to 28 metres high,and is a very long lived species with specimens up to 2000 years old. It inhabits forests that provide dense shade,such as oak woods,and prefers a limestone and chalk soil. Yew wood is used for furniture & tool handles and is also a good firewood.
