Orchid flowers (Spiranthes spiralis). The orchid produces many flowers on an erect stem. Two of the flowers are seen here. Each flower has a specialised petal (the lip, rounded and frilled) that attracts pollinators. This orchid is found throughout Europe,as well as parts of the Middle East and north-western Africa. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
