Orchid flowers (Polystachya pubescens). The flower at bottom is fully opened. Unlike most orchid flowers, the flower has its lip at top, with two of the sepals forming the wing-like structures on either side. The lip is a specialised petal that attracts pollinators to the flower. This orchid is found in southern Africa, growing in trees or on rocks. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers | |
