Orchid flowers (Phalaenopsis fimbriata). Two of the flowers are unopened (lower left). The flower at centre has opened to reveal a purple petal that is called the lip. This attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform to access the flower's reproductive parts (white). This orchid is found in the Indonesian islands. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers. Photographed in Java,Indonesia | |
