Orchid flowers (Kefersteinia tolimensis). There is one flower at centre and another partially seen at lower left. The reproductive parts (white) are seen on both flowers. The lip (a specialised petal) surrounds the reproductive parts, and is clearly seen on the flower at centre (frilled central petal). The lip attracts pollinators to the flower. This tropical orchid is found in Colombia and surrounding areas. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers | |
