Orchid flowers (Gongora quinquenervis, also known as Gongora maculata). Each of the flowers has a specialised petal called the lip (at right). The larger swept-back sepals are seen at left. The lip attracts pollinators to the flowers. This orchid is found in the American tropics from Central America to northern South America. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers | |
