Liverwort. Macrophotograph of the reproductive structures of a female liverwort,Marchantia polymorpha. These umbrella- like structures are spore-producing parts known as archegoniphores. Other methods of reproduction by liverworts include the production of a thallus by the plant (known as a gemma cup) which simply bud into new plants. Liverworts are related to mosses. They grow in damp habitats and are found on the ground, and sometimes on tree bark. They have no true vascular tissue, but are attached to the ground by means of root-like rhizoids which are also responsible for some absorption of water and nutrients. Magnification: x1.2 at 35mm | |
