False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a vegetative shoot of the moss Physcomitrella patens. The leaves of mosses are very simple compared with those of higher plants, usually being one cell thick as seen here; most of the cells contain chloroplasts. They do have mid-ribs and conducting strands. This moss is easy to culture. The plants are macerated, and when placed on a suitable medium many of the fragments will regenerate into whole plants.
