Oscillatoria. Light micrograph of the blue-green algae Oscillatoria sp. Strands are seen, each made up of a row of tiny cells; one strand is called a trichome. When surrounded by a gelatinous sheath the strand is called a filament. Oscillatoria lacks a slimy sheath. The strands of Oscillatoria exhibit a swaying motion and can also move backwards and forward, although the mechanism for this movement is not properly understood. Blue-green algae (Cyanophyta) are one of the most primitive organisms, dating back to pre-Cambrian times. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size | |
