Brewer's yeast. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cells of brewer's or baker's yeast,Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This fungus consists of single vegetative cells. A small daughter cell can be seen budding off from a mother cell at lower left. Once it has reached its full size, the daughter cell will be indistinguishable from its mother cell. S. cerevisiae ferments sugar, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide in the process. It is used in the production of beer, wine and bread. Magnification: x2,260 at 5x7cm size | |
