Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes, the cause of athlete's foot (tinea pedis) and scalp ringworm (tinea capitus). Both of these contagious skin infections are spread by the fungus's spores. Two types of spore body are seen here: macroconidia (brown),which contain multiple spores, and smaller but more numerous microconidia (blue),which contain single spores. Fungal hyphae appear in the background. This is one of many species of fungi that can grow in human skin, causing inflammation and itching. Athlete's foot and ringworm are treated with antifungal drugs. Magnification x900 at 5x7cm size. x450 at 35mm size | |
