False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a budding yeast cell. Yeast is a kind of single- celled fungus. Budding is a method of asexual reproduction in which a new individual is derived from an outgrowth (or bud) that becomes detached from the body of the parent (here, the lower cell). The large blue structures with slightly fuzzy edges are lipid bodies, consisting of glycerol & fatty acids; they serve as reservoirs for potential chemical energy. The green structure containing a red spot on the right side of the parent cell is the nucleus. Magnification: x5600 at 6x4.5cm size | |
