Cold-loving extremophile bacterium. Colour trans- mission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a dividing bacterium Psychrobacter urato- vorans. Its cell wall is pink, with cell contents green/blue; two daughter cells are being formed. This psychrophilic (cold-loving) bacterium is a food spoilage organism. First isolated from chilled sausage meat,it can also spoil other food stored at low temperatures in a refrigerator. It has been found in soil & cold waters, including those from Antarctica. It grows in temperatures as low as -2 degrees Celsius. Extremophile bacteria live in extreme conditions, such as low tempera- ture. Magnification: x22,000 at 6x7cm size | |
