Nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Light micrograph of the cells in the nodule of a legume root, colonized by nitrogen-fixing bacteria Rhizobium sp. The bacteria appear as tiny round structures inside cells. This symbiotic association between species of Rhizobium bacteria and root cells of leguminous plants occurs for the benefit of both. The bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into a usable organic form, something the plant cannot do,but which is imperative for its survival. In return the bacteria gain access to carbohydrate food sources of the plant,& are protected within the root tissue. Magnification: x250 at 35mm size | |
