Staphylococcus epidermidis. Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of colonies of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria, seen on an intraocular lens implant of the eye. These Gram-positive cocci (spherically-shaped) bacteria have a tendency to form grape-like clusters. Staphylococcus epider- midis is usually non-pathogenic,found harmlessly on the human skin and mucous membrane surfaces. It is associated with acne and minor skin lesions. These bacteria colonize plastic resulting in eye infections (endophthalmitis) and bacteraemia around catheters and surgical implants (such as heart valves). Implants may have to be removed.
