Anthrax bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of anthrax bacteria (Bacillus anthracis),the cause of the disease anthrax in humans and livestock. There are two forms of the disease. Cutaneous (skin) anthrax causes a raised itchy lesion at the site of entry of the bacteria. Antibiotic drugs can cure the disease, although it may be fatal if left untreated. Pulmonary (lung) anthrax is caused by inhaling the bacteria. It is fatal in most cases, unless antibiotics are given before the symptoms begin. There is some concern that terrorists could release large quantities of anthrax in a populated area, which would cause many deaths. Magnification: x8000 at 6x7cm size | |
