Anthrax bacteria. Light micrograph of anthrax bacteria (Bacillus anthracis),the cause of the disease anthrax in humans and livestock. There are two forms of the disease. Cutaneous (skin) anthrax causes an itchy raised lesion at the site of entry of the bacteria. It can be treated with antibiotic drugs, although it may be fatal if left untreated. Pulmonary (lung) anthrax is caused by inhaling large amounts of the bacteria. It is fatal in most cases, unless antibiotics are given before the symptoms begin. There is some concern that terrorists could release large quantities of anthrax in a populated area, which would cause many deaths. Magnification: x600 at 6x7cm size | |
