Each cell is rod-shaped (blue/ green) and has long hair-like flagellae (yellow) used for motility. Salmonella bacteria are of the Enterobacteriaceae family. They are Gram- negative bacilli bacteria that inhabit the gut. Salmonella includes the species S. typhi and S. paratyphi,responsible for typhoid and paratyphoid fever in humans.
