Sutterella bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a group of Sutterella wadworthensis bacteria. This species was described in 1996 after isolation from human abdominal fluid. It is a gram-negative,asaccharolytic (does not metabolise sugars) and microaerophilic (prefers low oxygen concentrations) bacterium. It has also been found in brain abscesses,intra-abdominal infections and bacteraemia. It is more resistant to antimicrobial drugs than the bacteria it was distinguished from,Campylobacter gracilis.
