Haemophilus parainfluenzae. Colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacteria Haemophilus parainfluenzae. A large and prominent protein structure seen throughout the length of the cell of the central bacterium is called an "intermediate filament-like network". The function of this structure is unknown but it may be part of the cell's skeleton. H. parainfluenzae cells are "sticky" and tend to form clumps. This bacterium has been linked with endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart cavity) and kidney infections. Magnification: x33,500 at 6x7cm size.
