Actinobacillus bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of the bacteria Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). Clusters of bacteria have formed after a fresh isolate of Aa (also known as Actinobacter) was cultivated in a liquid medium. The rod-shaped bacteria (small, round) contained in the clusters are bound together by their pili (thin crimson lines). Pili are hair- like appendages of which there may be hundreds on an individual bacterial cell. Aa is associated with juvenile and adult periodontitis and subacute endocarditis. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification: x8,700 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x30,000 at 10x8 inch size | |
