Acinetobacter. Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a group of sectioned cells from Acineto- bacter sp. These are Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria belonging to the Neisseriaceae group. Around each cell is a dark-grey capsular coat that helps cells stick together. Acinetobacter sp. are widely distributed in the atmosphere. They are also commonly found on the skin and in the gastrointestinal, genital and respiratory tract of many healthy individuals. Virulence of these bacteria is very low. Acinetobacter sp. can, however, act as opportunistic pathogens and cause infections such as septicaemia and meningitis. Magnification: x200,000 at 8x10 inch size | |
