False-colour transmission electron micrograph of the bacteria Haemophilus influenzae. A non-motile Gram- negative bacillus,H. influenzae is an important pathigen in children aged 1-5 years. It colonises the upper respiratory tract in most humans within the first months of life, and is usually harmless. It may, however, spread locally and cause disease of the lower respiratory tract (bronchitis and pneumonia). Certain capsulated strains are the most common cause of bacterial meningitis and epiglottitis in children. Magnification x9140 at 6x7cm size | |
