False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a colony of Listeria monocytogenes,an aerobic,non-sporing,Gram-positive species of flagellate bacteria. L. monocytogenes causes disease in humans,usually meningitis or septicaemia,that occurs in new-born infants,in the elderly & persons who are delibitated,suffering from malignant disease or on immunosuppressive drugs. Neonatal infections are caused by infection through the mother's vagina. The bacillus is believed to cause a fever in some pregnant women that may lead to abortion or still- birth.
