False colour transmission electron micrograph of a field of whooping cough bacteria,Bordetella pertussis. A few of the bacteria are undergoing cell division & appeared pinched in at the waist as a prelude to splitting into two cells. The whooping cough bacteria parasitise only humans. They cause a respiratory tract infection characterised by fits of coughing that end in loud inspiratory whoops. The infection usually occurs in childhood although adults are sometimes affected.
